Yes, Yes, Yes! You do need an appointment. If you only completed your Scaling and Root Planing treatment on one side of your mouth you will need another visit to complete the other side of your mouth. If you are done with your Scaling and Root Planing treatment, you will need to come back every 3-4 months for your periodontal maintenance cleaning appointment. Regular follow-up appointments are essential to slow down the progression of your gum disease and for maintaining your oral health (a.k.a. Wellness³²). If you do not have your next appointment booked, please call us at 833-925-8326.
It’s normal to experience some discomfort after Scaling and Root Planing. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen following the recommended dosage instructions on the packaging to alleviate pain.
Yes, mild bleeding from the gums is common for a day or two after Scaling and Root Planing. You can control it by gently biting down on a clean gauze pad placed over the treated areas for about 30 minutes. If bleeding persists or is severe, book your emergency visit by clicking here or giving us a call 833-925-8326.
To reduce swelling, apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek for 15-20 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours after the procedure.
Stick to a soft diet for the first 24-48 hours. Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods, and opt for cool or lukewarm foods and liquids.
Avoid brushing or flossing the treated areas for the first 24 hours. Afterward, resume brushing and flossing gently, being careful not to disturb the healing areas.
Absolutely Not. You must avoid smoking and alcohol consumption for at least 48 hours after Scaling and Root Planing, as they can slow down the healing process and increase the risk of complications.
It is not common to need any medication after Scaling and Root Planing Treatment. However, if you were prescribed antibiotics or other medications by our clinical team, use as directed. Finish the entire course of antibiotics, even if you start feeling better.
You should be coming in for your Periodontal Maintenance Cleaning every 3-4 months, depending on the severity of your disease. These appointments are crucial to monitor your healing progress and ensure the best results. Plan ahead and schedule your next visit ASAP.
Consider using a soft-bristle toothbrush and a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth and gums. If you are a member of our PROTECT, REBUILD or WELLNESS Program, please use the electronic toothbrush that you received as one of your benefits. We selected it because of its quality and soft bristles!
Avoid habits like teeth grinding (bruxism) and using toothpicks, as they can damage your teeth and gums. If you have a mouth guard, make sure it was custom milled for your teeth and is not of the store bought variety. Non custom night guards can irritate your gums and exacerbate your gum disease.
