Your temporary crown is designed to cover and protect your fragile tooth structure until we are able to permanently cement your laboratory fabricated crown. Temporary crowns are fragile and are not intended to be a permanent and/or fully functioning dental restoration. Absolutely! But hold off for about 30 minutes after the procedure. This gives the cement used to secure the crown some time to set properly. Also, whenever possible please avoid chewing on the side of your mouth that has the temporary crown.
For the first 24 hours, steer clear of hard, sticky, or extremely hot/cold foods. Be gentle while chewing, and it’s a good idea to use the opposite side of your mouth.
Please skip gum and sticky candies for now…or better yet for ever. These can pull your temporary crown loose and compromise your permanent restorations as well.
Reducing or avoiding smoking and alcohol can help maintain the durability of your temporary crown.
Staying hydrated is always a good idea for your overall oral health and to prevent dry mouth.
Keep up with your regular oral hygiene routine, but be gentle around the temporary crown when brushing that area.. A soft-bristle toothbrush will be your best friend. Avoid flossing the area where the temporary crown is placed.
Opt for an alcohol-free mouthwash or soothing saltwater rinses, as mouthwash with alcohol can weaken the cement that holds your temporary crown in place.
Yes, it’s quite common to feel some sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure for a few days. If it lingers or gets worse, please reach out to us 833-925-8326.
You can use over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed by our clinical team to ease any discomfort.
In rare cases you might notice that your temporary crown hits the opposing side of your dentition before the other teeth when you bite down. This can also cause pain and discomfort especially while chewing. Please don’t panic, this just means that we need to adjust the crown to fit better in your mouth. Please call us at 833-925-8326 so you can see our clinical team to get your temporary crown adjusted.
You should have been scheduled for your delivery appointment, which is generally scheduled within 7-14 business days to allow our lab to fabricate the crown and deliver it to our practice. Please make sure you do not miss this important appointment. If you do not have an appointment scheduled to deliver your permanent crown, please call us at 833-925-8326.
If this happens during our normal business hours, please call us 833-925-8326 so we can get you in to see our clinical team so they can reattach it for you. However, if this happens outside of our business hours and the temporary crown is intact, you can purchase over the counter temporary dental adhesive such as Dentemp and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If the temporary crown is broken, cracked, or you can’t get it to fit properly, DO NOT attempt to cement the crown. Our clinical team will need to see you on an emergency basis during our normal office hours. In the meantime, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth until you are able to see us.
If you tend to grind or clench your teeth, use a night guard to protect your temporary crown while you sleep.
Avoid chewing ice or anything else that is hard and abrasive to your teeth. Do not use your teeth as tools, such as opening up packages…that’s generally not a good idea for permanent restorations or even your natural teeth…you have scissors, knives and bottle openers for that 😊.
